Betting: No change in KZN law on Bookies

2008-11-18 00:00

JOHANNESBURG — A full bench of Constitutional Court judges yesterday ruled that KwaZulu-Natal will remain the only province in the country where companies or other corporate bodies will not be permitted to operate as bookmakers in the horse-racing industry.

Only private individuals may operate as bookmakers in this province. In all the other eight provinces, companies and other corporate bodies are also permitted to do so.

Betting World, one of the largest bookmakers in the country, with branches in all those provinces that allow companies to be bookmakers, earlier entered into an agreement with Michael Weare as a result of the ban in KwaZulu-Natal. In terms of the agreement, Weare was to sell his bookmaker business to Betting World.

The provincial government applied for the agreement to be declared null and void, as it was a way to circumvent the law prohibiting companies from operating as bookmakers in KwaZulu-Natal.
