Betting: odds favour kiwis

CAPE TOWN — As the final countdown to the Rugby World Cup draws closer, it seems that the odds are favouring a Tri-Nations team to walk away with the Webb Ellis Cup come October 23.

While hosts New Zealand are the overwhelming favourites at 13/20, according to’s latest odds, Robbie Deans’s Australia are in at 4/1, while the Springbok punters will see value in placing a bet on their team at 65/10 to win the World Cup.

When it comes to European countries, you have to go all the way down to 14/1 to 2003 Rugby World Cup champions England, while the inconsistent French, at 16/1, will try to prove their critics wrong at the business end of the tournament.

Ireland at 33/1 and Wales at 66/1 might be a tad far-fetched, but you never know what might happen at a Rugby World Cup when the pressure is well and truly on.
