Beware of Cellphone theft, say cops

2014-10-31 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG police have appealed to the public to be more vigilant when walking and talking on their cellphones.

On Wednesday, Safe City dealt with five cases of cellphone robberies in the CBD.

Midland’s police spokesperson Captain Zenzele Ndlovu said people should put away their cellphones when walking on busy roads to avoid becoming soft targets for cellphone snatchers.

He said most phones were snatched from behind, with thieves approaching victims from the back.

“Some victims are held at gunpoint before their cellphones are taken,” she said.

Safe City spokesperson Lucas Holtzhausen told The Witness that while cellphone snatching is very prevalent in the streets of Pietermaritzburg, victims seldom care to press charges.

Holtzhausen added that these criminals will continue snatching people’s belongings if the public doesn’t take a stand to assist the police to lock them up.

“We appeal to the people to avoid taking calls on busy streets; rather go inside a shop and answer the call,” said Holtzhausen. — WR.
