Big bucks for Currie Cup final

2008-10-17 00:00

The Sharks will rake in well over R6 million profit by hosting the Currie Cup final next Saturday, and a healthy slice of that will go to the players if they win.

All the tickets for the Currie Cup final against the Blue Bulls have already been sold and a capacity crowd of 54 00 will watch the game.

While some 30 000 tickets have already been allocated to suite and season ticket holders, the sale of the balance of seats will be profit for the Sharks. And, with tickets selling at R300 a head, a profit of more than R6 million will be made by the Sharks, while they will also benefit from the income at the many other outlets around the stadium.

Sharks CEO Brian van Zyl yesterday said that the final is more about prestige than profit.

“We want the Currie Cup back in Durban and we are offering a substantial win bonus to the players involved.”

Van Zyl said that the 42 players who saw action in the Currie Cup season, and the management staff, would benefit.

“We obviously can’t discuss the exact bonus figures, but it will run to millions of rands if the Sharks win.”

Van Zyl said the Sharks players also rewarded their loyal suite and season ticket holders.

“They get this Currie Cup final as a bonus and as part of their ticket rental,” he said.
