Big four square up for half-term

2011-10-22 00:00

THERE are just three matches today involving the top schools in the province as the big all-boys independent schools take their half-term this weekend. All three games are in the Durban area.

The two in-form sides meet each other on Dixons at Glenwood.

Visitors Maritzburg College will be keen to repeat their first-term victory against Glenwood. With the College top batting order having made more runs than their opposition and their better quick-bowling attack, this could well happen.

In addition to home ground advantage Glenwood will have plenty of belief that they can do well against arguably the top side in the province. Their spinners could pose problems on a responsive pitch, and if College bat first and are restricted in their scoring, then Glenwood will have a chance of a win. This is a big if, with the visitors firm favourites to repeat their first-term victory.

Northwood had to play all their first-term matches away from home as their ground had to be repaired after it was used as a practice venue during the Fifa World Cup last year. With home ground advantage they will be going all out to repeat the resounding away win against DHS.

Westville have a home game against Clifton and they will be mindful of their narrow loss to Clifton in the first term. This should be motivation enough to produce a better performance and increase their confidence ahead of their last few games this year.

In the Midlands there are two second-tier games of interest. Voortrekker will hope their bowlers can produce a better line and length to reverse the first-term loss against Carter. Howick will be keen to repeat the win against Treverton and keep a clean record against second-tier schools.
