Big names and some not so big names in schools’ festival

2013-05-02 00:00

FOR the fan who enjoys schoolboy rugby, Maritzburg College is the place to be today. Hosting the Wildeklawer Schools Rugby Festival is no mean feat as it also includes sides in the U16, U15 and U14 age groups, and to cap it, a netball tournament with 12 girls’ teams involved. Unfortunately, there are no KZN teams, as the teams are mainly from Gauteng and Western Cape.

The final rugby game today, at 4 pm, is likely to be the game to watch as it pits Outeniqua (latest ranking is third) against Waterkloof (ranked fifth). Outeniqua have played six matches, losing against Paarl Gym (ranked first) last Saturday. At the Kearsney Festival, they beat Grey College 22-20 in a fine game of rugger. Other notable schools beaten by Outeniqua are Paarl BHS (10), EG Jansen (six), Tygerberg (39) and Westville (25). Outeniqua have two SA Schools players from last year, wing Durhan van der Merwe and centre Warrick Gelant.

Waterkloof have had an easier start to their season, having won all six matches played, with a win against Paarl BHS and Nelspruit (seven) being their most significant. Today will be a real test to see whether their ranking is more or less correct.

The two KZN sides, hosts Maritzburg College and Glenwood, together with the Sharks XV, should bring in the local supporters.

Glenwood play Boland Landbou at 9 am, the second match of the day. This could be a tight contest, with Glenwood ranked 26 and Boland Landbou 29. Both teams will have seen each other play, as they were at the Kearsney Festival. Landbou lost against Grey College (ranked fourth), Kearsney (12) and beat Nico Malan (33). Glenwood lost against Paul Roos (19) and Paarl Gym but beat Selborne (37).

Maritzburg College, ranked four places below Paul Roos at 23, will play the penultimate game at 2.50 pm, in another tight contest. At Kearsney, Paul Roos lost against E.G. Jansen, beat Glenwood and drew with Selborne. Since then, they have lost against Grey HS (21). At the College 150th Anniversary Festival, College beat Grey HS, drew with Noordkaap (16) and lost against Queens (35).

The Sharks XV were unable to use players from the top tier of schools because they will be playing their normal fixtures and the players have been selected from three schools: Northwood, George Campbell and Port Natal. Northwood are the strongest of the three, but they have not been able to win a game against any of the top schools in the province. This does beg the question whether they will be worthy of playing in a festival like this. Today they are playing Paarl BHS on Snows field at 11.20 am and a big score against them could well be in the offing.

The Wildeklawer XV, the other composite side not yet published, is another that is unlikely to be as competitive, unless they have some top players from schools in the Western Cape. They will play Paarl Gym at 1.40 pm, where heat could play a role, where the winning margin is also likely be large.

The first match of the day, at 7.50 am, has Noordkaap, in their first Wildeklawer appearance, against E.G. Jansen. The latter have had better results and should win the game, but Noordkaap will not be a pushover.

The third match of the day, at 10.10 am, sees Monument (15) against HTS Drostdy (27). When looking at Monument’s results this year, they are perhaps too high in the rankings. They have beaten Rondebosch (20) and Noordkaap, but lost against Centurion (17) and E.G. Jansen. This could see a surprise from the Boland side.

Grey College, the only team that has won all their games over the years at the Wildeklawer festivals, will play Oakdale Agricultural School from George at 11.20 am. The latter are ranked 13 and this will be the first match ever played between these two schools.

The game at 12.30 pm is another where conditions are likely to be hot. Diamantveld (not in the top 40) play against Grey HS (21) from Port Elizabeth. Grey should win this game, although the score against the team that both schools have played — Affies (ranked second) — was very similar. In Affies’ first game of the season they won 32-7 and at the College Festival, Affies won 31-3 against Grey.

The 10th game, which is on the B field at 10 am, has Affies against Framesby (40). Affies should run away with a big win. At the Kearsney Festival, Framesby lost all three games against Noordkaap, Kearsney and Westville. The rankings are an aggregate of four different rankings made after last Saturday’s games.

8.30 am Menlopark vs Paarl GHS, Afrikaans Meisies vs E.G.
