Big names join parkrun

2014-11-10 00:00

TWO of the biggest names in world marathon circles, Kenyans Dennis Kimetto and Wilson Kipsang, will run aside locals at the inaugural Umhlanga Parkrun on November 15.

Kipsang is a former world record holder for the marathon (2:03:23) and won the New York marathon 10 days ago.

He is also the first male runner in history to win the triple crown of the Berlin, London and New York marathons, while Kimetto is the current marathon World record holder (2:02:57) which he set at the Berlin marathon in September.

“We are super excited about this wonderful news. Never before has an incumbent world record holder run in South Africa. This is a first,” said Ray de Vries, event director of Umhlanga Parkrun.

The fun run event is part of an international organisation which has over 1,5 million registered runners and walkers worldwide. Parkruns feature weekly, free, timed 5 km runs and are open to everyone. The appeal is simple, it is free, safe and easy to take part in.

“I have been involved in events worldwide for over 25 years and seldom have I seen such a wonderful ethos.

“People from all walks of life make this their weekly recreational activity.

“Some people run, some walk, some push a pram, some push a handicapped person in a wheelchair and some come just to volunteers their services to their fellow men …” added De Vries.

Local businesses and residents alike have welcomed the influx of runners and walkers with open arms according to e Vries.
