KZN Inland U19 enjoyed an innings and 128-run victory inside two days against Griqualand West in the Cricket South Africa U19 Competition three-day match at the Maritzburg Oval over the weekend.

While this competition features many schoolboys, it is not a schools’ competition and is run by the senior provincial unions.

Declaring on their overnight 426 for six on day one, Inland then proceeded to take 20 wickets on day two to wrap up the easiest of victories — and this without the possible services of any cricketers from Maritzburg College or Michaelhouse, who were not considered due to school commitments.

Griquas’s first innings realised 138 all out with opener Xander Pitchers (58) and Patrick Kruger (34) a little later   getting   some  joy   with   the bat.

The Hilton College trio of Lungisani Ngidi (3-27), Bantu Futshane (3-7) and Brian Pfaff (3-35) were the chief destroyers, while Robin Mitchell of St Charles snapped up the top four batsmen behind the stumps.

Following on, Griquas fared little better, their last wicket falling with the total on 163.

Pitchers (45) again top-scored Vaughn Moses of St Charles (5-28) and Pfaff (3-21) were Inland’s star bowlers. The home side earned 19,72 points to Griquas’ two.

Inland are now third on the four-team Pool B log with KZN Coastal way on top.

Pool A is led by Boland with the Pool C leaders being Northerns.

In Bloemfontein, KZN Coastal beat Free State by an innings and 17 runs, with Kyle Simmonds bagging remarkable match figures of 10-48.
