Bike World Cup for Minnaar

SOUTH African MTB Downhill Champion Greg Minnaar returned to the top of the elite downhill podium with a thrilling UCI Mountain Bike World Cup victory at Fort Willliam, Great Britain, last weekend. In front of over 9 000 spectators at the Nevis Range resort, the Pietermaritzburg 29-year-old finished nearly two seconds ahead of 19-year-old Danny Hart. New Zealander Brook MacDonald was third.

Howick MTB Classic attracts big field

The Fairfield Dairy Howick MTB Classic took place from Howick High School last weekend. Jedson Tooms took the sprint finish from Travis Walker in a time of one hour, 50 minutes and 18 seconds. Third place went to Andrew Warr (1:55:45). Ashleigh Parker-Moffatt took the women’s win in 2:13:30 followed by Jean Hackland (2:24:57) and junior Andrea de Boer (2:41:40).

The Youth riders fought it out for the honours in the 20 km race with Mark Walker taking the win in 59 minutes and 49 seconds, seven seconds ahead of David Muller in second and Joshua Bull in third (1:01:08). Mikaela Jonsson won the women’s race in a time of 1:07:50. Lauren Drummond placed second (1:12:56), with Cath de Souza third (1:15:16). Full results available on www.elitetiming.co.za

MOUNTAIN BIKING

The Sardine MTB Super Classic takes place tomorrow from The Old Pont Resort in Port Edward. Racing starts from 8.30 am. Events are 45 km Super Classic, 25 km Intermediate and 10 km fun ride. For further info contact Natalie Abbott at 083 549 6710 or log onto www.roag.co.za

Next up is the Sappi Scottburgh MTB race on Sunday, June 18. The event starts from Scottburgh main beach at 9 am. Registration will be open at the Scottburgh Lifesaving Club between 7 am and 8.30 am. Three events include 42 km Classic (R120), 20 km (R80) and 10 km (R50). Pre-entries close on www.roag.co.za on Wednesday.

CYCLING

The KZN Lassen Series continues tomorrow morning on the Camperdown circuit. No entries will be taken on the day. For further info contact Michelle Matthews at 084 407 5566.

MULTISPORT

The first event in the Time Freight Multisport Series starts on Sunday, June 26 at Albert Falls Dam. Participants may choose between the MULTISPORT and the MULTIX events. For further information keep posted to www.maxcluer.com.
