Bike week lays down deep tracks in Margate

2011-04-30 00:00

IF Thursday night was anything to go by, Bike Week will put Margate and South Africa on the map like never before. All the “grootkoppe”, or top brass, as organiser Martin Engelbrecht put it, were at the VIP launch.

Managers from Harley Davidson International said Margate’s efforts in making the event such a success were felt all over the world.

Said Ken Ostermann, general manager of Harley-Davidson marketing operations,“This is my first time in South Africa, and it’s incredible here.

“To have our brand bring people together like this is overwhelming, Harley Davidson acknowledges Margate, and South Africa, for the commitment they have shown to this wonderful venture.

“It doesn’t matter who you are or what you do, if you own a Harley you are part of our family, and it’s great to see so many thousands of our extended family members here to celebrate together,” he said.

Hibuscus Coast Deputy Mayor Nolwazi Shusha told her guests that the partnerships forged through the event are “now and forever”.

“Tourism is at an all-time high. if I could ride one, I wouldn’t hesitate to get one,” she quipped.

Engelbrecht, who initiated the festival at Margate three years ago, paid tribute to the riders who had volunteered their time and labour to puttBike Week together.

“We are expecting 200 000 people and 20 000 riders ... those figures speak for themselves,” he said.
