KWAZULU-NATAL Premier S’bu Ndebele has announced that the funeral of the late Billy Nair, anti-apartheid activist and former Member of Parliament, will be an official provincial funeral.

The funeral will take place on Thursday, October 30, at the Exhibition Centre in Durban.

Nair, a veteran of the struggle for liberation, died on Thursday, October 23, at St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban.

Ndebele said Nair was a leading member of the African National Congress (ANC) from the time of Inkosi Albert Luthuli and led the ANC underground after his release from Robben Island in 1984.

He was also active in Mkhonto Wesizwe, the United Democratic Front and the Natal Indian Congress.

“On behalf of the government and people of KwaZulu-Natal, we want to offer our sincere condolences to Mrs Elsie Nair [wife of Billy Nair] and their family and friends,” said Ndebele.
