THE first taste of spring was timed for the second event in the Jeep Apparel Multisport Series at Shongweni last Sunday as over 400 athletes descended on Shongweni Dam.

Andrew Birkett was back to prove that his victory in the Multisport series last year was no fluke. Having been handed the reins during the bike leg from Dan Hugo, who suffered a broken chain, Birkett seized the opportunity to finish in a fast one hour 40 minutes and 40 seconds.

Trevor Hellens was second, ahead of Justin Porteous. Jean-Paul van der Linde took fourth and Eric Zondi fifth.

Robyn Kime won the women’s race in 2:02,56. Jeannie Bomford placed second ahead of Jean Hackland in third.

Darren Goddard won the MultiX Long Course event in 1:31,57, with Ryan Redman in second. In the women’s race, Samantha Serfontein took a win ahead of Claire Farrimond.

Craig Jarrett and Jordan Peek led in the Multisport Short Course with Joshua Ducker and Debbie O’Brien winning the MultiX Short Course.
