Birketts stroll to Hella-Hella win

2010-02-10 00:00

THE Birkett brothers, Chris and Andrew, made their Umkomaas SA K2 intentions clear with an emphatic win in Kingfisher Canoe Club’s Bo’s Hire Hella–Hella Classic on Sunday.

The two UKZN students completed the tricky 32 km course from Hella-Hella to Josephine’s Bridge without mishap and just over six minutes clear of second-placed Wayne Wilson and Kelvin Trautman. Shaun and Ben Biggs took the third spot a minute-and-a-half later.

Commended on a perfect run, Andrew retorted: “Not perfect. No swims, but we hit a lot of rocks.” To put this into perspective, a third of the small field of 32 failed to complete the race.

Safe and quick, however, were the only women’s boat of Hillary Pitchford and Abie Adie, who came home sixth overall, and the first K1 of Nibs Taylor, fifth overall and proving the value of experience in this great river.
