Births: 18 New Year’s babies in the province

No fewer than 18 babies were born in KwaZulu-Natal hospitals between midnight and 1 am yesterday, the Health Department said.

The earliest birth recorded after midnight was that of a baby born in Durban’s R.K. Khan just five seconds after midnight. Two others were born in the same hospital in the first hour of 2009.

Other hospitals that recorded births during this period are: G.J. Crookes (one baby), Appelsbosch (1), Northdale (1), Edendale (1), Ladysmith (2), Vryheid (1), King Edward (3), Mahatma Gandhi (1), Prince Mshiyeni (1), Addington (2) and Osindisweni (1).

Records for the Lower Umfolozi and Maphumulo hospitals were not available at the time of print.
