Bleeding man’s long wait for help

2009-08-05 00:00

A MAN with a seemingly serious head injury spent over an hour-and-a-half in Rockdale in Mountainrise waiting for an ambulance yesterday.

The witnesses to the incident contacted The Witness and said that the man had been left there groaning in pain as the ambulance failed to show up.

One of the concerned people, who wished to remain anonymous, said they had no idea what to do as they had called the ambulance “ages ago” and it was yet to show up.

“This person suffered a head injury and is bleeding profusely and we don’t know what to do for him as he is lying on the street in agonising pain.

“We called the ambulance repeatedly and many people have also called it, but it is yet to show up,” said the source.

The man, who was allegedly intoxicated, hit his head in a fall.

The source said the injured man was lying just across from Northdale Hospital and they had even dispatched someone to Northdale to ask for assistance. However, the employees at the hospital had told them that they should make a plan and try to load the person into a bakkie and bring him to the hospital, “which is impossible since we cannot move the person”.

The Witness contacted the EMRS uMgungundlovu ambulance service. The consultant on the phone, who did not give her name, confirmed that they had received the call for an ambulance, but said the call had only come 15 minutes earlier. She said the ambulance had since been dispatched to the scene.
