EDINBURGH — Sibusiso Sithole scored a solo try from the final phase of the match to give the Blitzbokke a 36-35 win over Australia in the finals of the season-ending HSBC World Sevens Series.

Sithole picked up from the base of a ruck, outpaced two opponents, palmed off another on the wing and dived over in the corner to complete a comeback from 28-7 down.

Steven Hunt touched down three times for South Africa, who also scored through Frankie Horne and Bernado Botha.

Australia had earlier ended New Zealand’s hopes of rounding off its IRB World Series-winning campaign with a fifth win from eight events with a 19-12 semi-final victory. Australia finished fifth in the series.

Having won last week’s London Sevens, the Blitzbokke finished second in the overall standings as England slipped to third with two defeats.

England lost to New Zealand in the cup quarter-finals before a 34-19 loss to Fiji in the plate.

Fiji took fourth overall after beating Samoa 26-14 in the plate final, while Kenya won the bowl and Canada took the shield.

A week after Scotland struck in the last minute to beat Kenya in the bowl final at the London Sevens, the visitors scored a 21-14 win over the hosts at the same stage.

Kenya also racked up the biggest win of the day at Murrayfield with a six-try 40-0 victory over Spain.

Russia beat the United States 17-12 in the shield semi-finals.
