‘Blondes’ just want to have fun

2009-02-19 00:00

A SEXY cast, great chemistry and a host of well-known songs combine to make Blondes on Deck at uShaka Marine World a fun night out.

Leads Lauren Laing (seen recently in the Barnyard production Rocking All Over The World) and Jonothan Didlick (member of boy band Tequila Sunrise) have a ball with songs ranging from Barry Manilow’s Copacabana to Sting’s Englishman in New York, Blondie’s Call Me and Marilyn Monroe’s Sparkling Diamonds.

On the evening I went along there were also two moments, which, along with the delicious buffet, made for a memorable evening.

In the first, Didlick and Laing send up a scene from the film, Titanic, in which Leonardo di Caprio and Kate Winslet stand on the ship’s prow, during their rendition of Faith Hill’s Way you love me, and in the second, completely unexpected moment, an audience member opened her brolly to prevent Didlick from crying over her in David Bowie’s Sorrow. It had the audience in stitches and was nearly Didlick’s undoing.

Another highlight was singer and dancer Londiwe Dhlomo’s performance of Etta James’ I Just Wanna Make Love to You. She’s a real talent and I’m sure KZN audiences will be seeing a lot more of her in the future.

Blondes also benefits from some tight musical direction by Shem Mahabeer and his team of musicians and great dance routines performed by Dhlomo, Jacqui Majoor and Tami du Preez.

All in all this is a fun show, packed full of tunes you’ll know, and, given the reasonable price tag of R150, including the meal, is worth putting on your must-do list.
