Blood: Only one-and-a-half days’ supply left

2008-07-21 00:00

KZN has just one-and-a-half days’ blood supply available.

Shabnum Ismail, public relations officer for the SA National Blood Service, said patients may die if more blood is not collected soon.

“It is very critical. Reserves are at an all-time low, which is worrying for this time of the year.” She said she found empty fridges when checking on blood stocks yesterday morning.

Siphiwe Mthimkhulu, laboratory supervisor at the central blood bank, said that in some cases, doctors have cancelled elective procedures as there is no blood available.

He added that recently there have been no stocks at all of type O blood.

The Pietermaritzburg depot supplies 16 hospitals in the midlands.

“Locals can make a life-saving donation at the permanent [Jabu Ndlovu Street] or Hayfields Mall clinics,” said Ismail. She appealed to donors to visit the clinic at the Liberty Midlands Mall at the entrance to the basement parking lot this weekend.
