Blood donors get free tyre balancing

2011-10-07 00:00

THE South African National Blood Service (SANBS) and Tiger Wheel and Tyre are working hand in hand to help build up blood stocks in October.

Schools exams and year-end deadlines traditionally make it difficult for the service in KwaZulu-Natal to build up enough blood supplies at schools and factories to meet the demand during holidays.

Said Gail Nothard, a marketing consultant with SANBS, “The building up of blood stocks for the December holidays is crucial, which means that collecting blood in this last quarter becomes essential to ensure that there is a sufficient blood supply.”

Tiger Wheel and Tyre has partnered with SANBS to promote blood donations in October.

Blood donors at the Pietermaritzburg blood donor centre in Jabu Ndlovu Road will receive a voucher for free wheel balancing at the nearest Tiger Wheel and Tyre branch, said Nothard.

“In addition donors can go into a draw to win a Tiger Wheel and Tyre gift card worth R5 000, R3 000 or R1 000.”

SANBS aims to maintain a stock level of five days’s supply and to collect 3 000 units per day to meet the demand.

More details are available at the donor centre. To be a blood donor you must be between 16 and 65 years of age, weigh over 50 kg, lead a sexually safe lifestyle and be in good health. Donors are urged to eat a good meal before giving blood.
