Blood supply in KZN critically low

2015-04-09 00:00

THE province has less than a day’s blood supply.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) yesterday issued an appeal to blood donors to come forward as current blood shortage levels are critical. Almost 40% of the blood collected is from schools and universities, and due to the holidays they are unable to host blood drives.

The blood stock at a national level stands at 1,5 days.

“SANBS needs to maintain a stock level of five days at all times by collecting 3 000 units of blood per day to meet the demand of the thousands of patients who are reliant on blood transfusions for their survival,” said Vanessa Raju, communication manager of SANBS.

The organisation is appealing to members of the public who meet blood donor requirements, especially blood donors who may have missed a blood donation, to help boost supplies by donating blood.
