Bloody end to secret love affair

2012-09-12 00:00

A SECRET romance ended tragically when a married woman was hacked to death with an axe and her lover was attacked in the KwaMadlala area of Vulindlela yesterday.

Phumlani Mtolo (38) was at home with his 36-year-old girlfriend when they were attacked during the early hours of yesterday morning.

Mtolo, who stays in an outbuilding, said he had gone briefly to the main house and when he returned he found his girlfriend covered in blood.

“I returned at about 2 am and she was covered in blood on her face and I was shocked.

“I asked her what had happened, but I couldn’t finish the question.”

Then he was bashed on the head with an axe.

The assailant “hit me with the axe again and ran out of the house and I cried for help”, said Mtolo, who was speaking to The Witness by phone from Edendale Hospital.

The woman died at the scene.

Mtolo said he was not aware that his girlfriend was a married woman with five children.

The couple met in 2009 and had been in an on-and-off relationship since.

“I only found out that she was married when her mother told me this morning.”

The victim’s aunt said she received a call from Mtolo about the attack and was surprised to learn that her niece had a boyfriend.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said a case of murder was being investigated.

He urged anyone with information about the case to call Detective Captain Mandla Mkhabela of Taylors Halt detectives at 033 505 0017 or 079 845 5166.
