‘Blue light’ bodyguard in court for shooting

VIP Protection Unit member Constable Hlanganani Nxumalo, who allegedly fired two shots at a vehicle causing an accident and injuring eight people on the N3 highway on December 15, is to appear in the Camperdown regional court on February 13.

Camperdown district magistrate Bheki Phoswa yesterday told Nxumalo that a regional court prosecutor will decide on what course to follow.

The state is still waiting for more evidence from various sources.

Nxumalo faces eight counts of attempted murder as a result of the eight people’s injuries. They were taken to hospital, treated and discharged on the night of the accident.

The driver of the vehicle allegedly shot at lost control and it swerved across the median, crashing into an oncoming vehicle, a Camperdown court was told by an investigating officer when Nxumalo first appeared.

Nxumalo was initially refused bail in Camperdown, but he appealed against the refusal and was granted bail of R3 500 by Judge Isaac Madondo in Pietermaritzburg on December 18.

The magistrate had wrongly taken into account the public outcry at the bullying of motorists by VIP escorts, the judge found.

Nxumalo was a passenger in an escort vehicle that was hurrying to pick up Social Development MEC Meshack Radebe.

Many people have asked why the driver of the vehicle has not been charged as well — he allegedly drove away from an accident scene and lawyers believe he should also be charged with the eight attempted murders — but inquiries have evoked nothing concrete.

Many media personnel were at the court yesterday.
