Bodyguard: Men in court after weekend arrests for kidnapping

2008-10-07 00:00

The bodyguard of Msunduzi municipality’s deputy mayor, Sherwin Naidoo (30) of Alexandra Road Extension, and a co-accused, Collin Lesley Gous (26) of Woodlands, appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday in connection with allegations of kidnapping and unlawful possession of a rifle.

Magistrate Paul van Dongen granted a request to postpone the case for seven days to enable the investigating officer to verify the safety of witnesses and for further investigation.

The charge sheet has not yet been finalised. Currently it reflects a charge of unlawful possession of a rifle as well as a charge that the men kidnapped Carlos Leslie Ramon Thurston on October 5 and kept him in the car.

The Witness reported on Monday that the offences are believed to be related to drug-dealing at a Pietermaritzburg night club.

Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said at the time the victim was abducted after he allegedly failed to hand over the proceeds of drug sales to the accused.

A deal was allegedly brokered to secure the man’s release, which was monitored by police, and led to the arrests of the two accused.
