Bodyguard dodges bullets

A BODYGUARD narrowly escaped a hail of bullets when the home he was protecting came under fire on Wednesday.

Bongingosi Ndlovu is the bodyguard of Mondli Mkhize, the former speaker of Imbabazane Municipality.

He said he was about to close the gate and garage door of Mkhize’s house at Ntabamhlophe, near Estcourt, when he noticed a shadow moving behind the garage.

He said he threw himself to the ground as shots rang out. He crawled back to the house to save his life and that of the former speaker’s family.

“The shots were coming from two sides of the house and I was very relieved to be inside the house and find them [Mkhize’s family] safe,” said Ndlovu.

Mkhize said he was helping his child do homework at around 9 pm when Ndlovu went out to close the gates.

“The incident shocked everyone in the house as we did not know what was happening outside. My son is still traumatised and cried in his sleep.”

Co-operative Governance MEC Nomusa Dube placed the Imbabazane Municipality under administration last month, because of the poor working relationship between councillors of different parties.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said that a case of attempted murder was being investigated.

No one was injured and no arrests have been made.
