Bogus bonus

2008-02-22 00:00

Controversy continues to surround the dismissal last year of Jabulani Mjwara as director general of the provincial Department of Agriculture. A media report earlier this week claims that six months after he was charged with financial mismanagement, he was awarded the highest possible bonus for good performance. Even if this happened before he was charged, it would have been inappropriate. There is a further allegation that Mjwara still derives large financial benefit from tender contracts that were entered upon during his tenure as head of department.

It is high time that these matters were finally and authoritatively sorted out. The provincial treasury has refused to divulge the contents of a forensic investigation report on the grounds that this could hinder a possible police inquiry. Such refusal is easily seen as a cover-up and the time has come when the taxpaying public needs to be given the full facts.
