Bogus doctor gets six years’ jail

THE former sex worker who posed as a doctor for a number of months was yesterday sentenced to six years’ in jail for fraud after being found guilty by the Durban Commercial Crime Court.

Jonathan Peterson (27), of Pietermaritzburg, who went under the alias of Dr Andile Duma, conned several people out of thousands of rand and claimed to be a cardiologist and cancer specialist at Durban’s Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said Peterson pleaded guilty to all charges against him.

“During his arrest, he was found in possession of documents bearing fake logos of Netcare, the KZN Department of Health and banking institutions,” said Zwane.

He was also found with forged tender award letters, tender advertisements, employment letters and invoices.

“After his arrest business people flocked to the commercial crime offices in John Ross House, identifying the 27-year-old as the man who took money from them and promised tenders worth millions.

“The business deals he promised them included building of a new Netcare hospital in Durban, a Netcare call centre tender worth R50 million, procurement of Netcare uniform, delivering of stationery to Netcare hospitals in the province as well as catering at a hospital in Pietermaritzburg,” said Zwane.
