‘Bogus prosector’: woman in the dock

2010-10-12 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG woman, Sukana Montague (43) of Church Street, appeared briefly in the local magistrate’s court yesterday on a charge of extortion.

She allegedly pretended to be a state advocate in an attempt to extort R20 000 from the mother of high-profile murder accused, Kalisha Rajcoomar.

The state alleges that Montague pretended to Rajeshree David that she was state advocate Candy Kander of the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and that she could secure her daughter’s release from prison in exchange for money.

Montague — who is currently under investigation for several similar offences in which she allegedly also posed as a prosecutor and a magistrate — was not asked to plead to any charges and the matter was postponed for seven days for further investigation.

Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said yesterday that David, unlike some of the other victims of the scam, had not paid any money to Montague or anyone else, but notified the police about the matter.

David’s daughter, Kalisha Rajcoomar, and Kalisha’s husband, Amith Sewkarran, have already been convicted in the high court of the murder of Rajcoomar’s former lover and the father of her child, Sandesh Poorun.

Their trial is due to resume on October 25 for evidence relating to sentence.

Police have appealed to anyone else who could have fallen vitim to a similar extortion scam to contact Colonel Gopz Govender at 033 398 9727 or 082 779 7141.
