Bokkie gift ‘De Villiers’s idea’

2013-11-11 00:00

PRINCE GEORGE will be able to cuddle up to the Springbok team’s talisman, a stuffed bokkie.

Prince William was clearly surprised when Bok captain Jean de Villiers gave him the team talisman after their Test against Wales on Saturday as he handed De Villiers the Prince of Wales trophy.

Head of the Boks’ communications AnnaLee Murray said yesterday it was her and De Villiers’s idea to give the stuffed toy to the prince.

She said when she heard Prince William would be at the match, she suggested to De Villiers that it would be a nice gesture to give him the baby bok for Prince George.

She said because De Villiers was also a new dad of two girls, it was wonderful that he could hand the Bokkie to the prince. Murray said De Villiers told Prince William to please give the bokkie to Prince George so that he would hopefully grow up to also enjoy rugby.

The Boks also handed a jersey to Wales captain Sam Warburton, signed by all the South Africa players to show their empathy with Wales hooker Matthew Rees, who has been diagnosed with cancer.
