Boks put on fighting show

2014-01-04 00:00

CAPE TOWN — The Proteas beat the Springboks by 14 runs in their Twenty20 match in the Festival of Cricket at Newlands yesterday.

Bob Skinstad top-scored for the Boks with 34 off 22 balls, but they were dismissed for 174. Earlier, Faf du Plessis scored a blistering 42-ball 77 not out as the Proteas reached 188 for four after being inserted by the Springboks.

Jacques Kallis gave the Proteas a solid start, scoring 39 off 32, settling the nerves as Willem Alberts stood on a hat-trick after dismissing Quinton de Kock and Henry Davids off successive deliveries.

Du Plessis and David Miller (40 not out) added an unbeaten 89 runs off the last 7.4 overs to boost the total.

The Proteas have won the last eight out of their nine T20 matches and were, of course, the favourites.

But, captain Du Plessis admitted at the toss that they had never played against opponents the size of the Boks, and that it should be a good contest.
