Bonanza: Oppenheimer Week, Hilton festival offer quality matches

2011-09-30 00:00

THE prestigious, 52-year-old Oppenheimer Week, which is hosted as always at Maritzburg College and which includes a size-able number of South Africa’s top cricket schools, takes place in and around the KZN capital from tomorrow to next Tuesday.

The corresponding U14 Michaelmas Hilton Festival hosted by Hilton College takes place at the school from today to Monday.

The Oppenheimer Week features 17 school first XIs plus a KZN Development XI, while the U14 festival has 12 sides in action, which together makes for a remarkable number of quality matches to look forward to.

The history of Oppenheimer Week gives a hint of what might lie ahead for today’s young crop.

Former Oppenheimer Week players include Graeme Smith, AB de Villiers, Kevin Pietersen, Jonty Rhodes, Hashim Amla, Lance Klusener, Barry Richards, Hansie Cronje, Kepler Wessels and Makhaya Ntini.

Maritzburg College coach and SA U19 selector Mike Bechet told The Witness yesterday that among a posse of national and provincial players to watch out for at Oppenheimer Week are SA U19 cricketers Shaylin Pillay (KES), Prenelan Subrayan (Glenwood), Corne Dry (Grey College) and Maritzburg College captain Calvin Savage.
