Bone marrow: ‘Superheroes’ fighting against leukaemia

2011-04-06 00:00

Sid Thorne (centre), husband of leukaemia patient Sandy who is in desperate need of a bone-marrow stem-cell donor match, is seen with (from left) Tammy Peckham from Black Coffee, dancers Juliet Downes and Lauren Emmerich and Tanya van Heerden from Millhouse Brand Communicators.

These 'superheroes' preparing for The Sunflower Fund Heroes of Hope Charity Ball in Association with International Bank Vaults, are taking the fight against leukaemia seriously. The event, which takes place on May 6 at the Elangeni Hotel, aims to raise money for the tissue typing of potential bone-marrow stem-cell donors for inclusion on the South African Bone Marrow Registry.

It is unlikely that a donor match will be found outside a patient's ethnic group, which means they need to recruit 100 000 black, coloured, Indian and white donors. Tickets to the Ball are R600 per person or R6 000 for a table of 10 which includes complementary KWV wine, a three-course meal, gifts and amazing entertainment. To help these superheroes achieve their objective of creating an accessible bone-marrow registry, please make your booking by phoning Stephanie Berry at 078 207 9041 or e-mailing steph@sunflower Prizes and auction items are also needed and would be greatly appreciated.
