Book celebrates Varsity rugby’s centenary

2011-07-09 00:00

THE Time of Our Lives is a celebration of Varsity Rugby Club’s centenary year.

Laced with anecdotes from the club’s rich alumni, the book is a must-have for all local rugby enthusiasts who are keen to revisit the glory days of the student rugby side.

This publication provides an enlightening portal back to a time when the only reward for a game well done was a few cold ones in the change-room.

The list of contributors is also illustrious, with former Springboks Gary Teichmann and Joel Stransky sharing their best times while playing for the KZN University.

Currie-Cup-winning, Sharks skipper Craig Jamieson supplied the foreword and features in a number of humorous tales himself.

For those interested in knowing just how much of a feeder to the Sharks the tertiary institution has been over the years, the book lists an impressive number of past players who went on to achieve not only on the rugby park, but also in other fields, such as South African fast bowler Vince van der Bijl, and Natal cricketers Errol Stewart and Udo Goedeke to name a few.

It truly is a celebration of the glory days, and will hopefully serve as a shot in the arm for the current crop of UKZN players to aspire to punch above their weight in the manner of their predecessors.

With all proceeds going towards bursaries for players to supplement the club’s squad, this really is an opportunity for the Natal community to give a leg up to an institution which is part of the furniture in this province.

All rugby enthusiasts ought to buy a copy, if only to see what antics the likes of Jamieson, Stransky and Van der Bijl got up to during the “time of their lives.” — Sports Reporter.
