Books local and lekker

THE Exclusive Books’ annual Homebru Promotion, celebrating local writing talent, will run from June 1 to July 11 this year to coincide with the World Cup, and in the hope that visitors may want to know more about South Africa than its ability to host the soccer. And there’s plenty for the locals as well.

It has been a tough year for publishers and booksellers the world over, but Homebru offers plenty of good local writing from the last 12 months, exploring the essence of what living in South Africa and being South African is all about.

Publishers submit titles to Exclusive Books who then select the 30 books on the Homebru list — biographies, sport, politics, economic analysis, crime, fiction, cooking and travel.

Among them are Hello South Africa — Phrasebook –—11 Languages by Mark and Michelle Macdonald, Soccer Chic , the South African Way by Craig Fraser and Evita’s Kossie Sikelela by Evita Bezuidenhout. Then there’s The Rise and Fall of Apartheid by David Welsh and South Africa’s Brave New World by R. W. Johnson, and the long awaited Eggs to Lay, Chickens to Hatch by Chris Van Wyk,

There’s plenty of fiction to give a flavour of what does (and doesn’t) go on in South Africa — The Spud Special Edition by John van de Ruit, Spilt Milk by Kopano Matlwa, along with authors Rosamond Kendal, Marita van der Vyver, Zinaid Meeran, Deon Meyer and Patricia Schonstein.
