Boost for Sharks as Mvovo, Alberts back on field

2013-04-27 00:00

THERE was good news all round for the beleaguered Sharks in New Zealand yesterday when injured Springbok wing Lwazi Mvovo was cleared to join them on tour and flank Willem Alberts returned to action in impressive style in last night’s Vodacom Cup game at King’s Park.

Mvovo, who has been sidelined with a fractured hand for the past month, is on his way to New Zealand and will join the Sharks tomorrow along with JC Janse van Rensburg, the specialist loosehead prop, who is flying in from France.

Both are expected to be available for the Sharks’ second tour game against the Highlanders in Dunedin next Saturday.

And at King’s Park last night, Springbok flank flank Willem Alberts, who underwent shoulder surgery early in the Super Rugby season, played in his first game of the year and grabbed two tries in the Sharks’ 46-31 win over the Pampas XV in their Vodacom Cup match.

The powerful flank showed up strongly on both attack and defence and he is expected to join the Sharks for their final two tour games against the Reds in Brisbane and the Force in Perth.

Alberts played for an hour before being substituted as the Sharks XV, after a superb first half, went on to clinch top spot in the South section.

They will meet the fourth-placed team in the North section in a home quarter-final.

The Sharks led 36-5 after an excellent first half, but the game Pampas XV refused to lie down and outscored the home team 26-10 in the second half.

Sharks XV 46 (36) Tries: Kotaro Matsushima, Willem Alberts (2), Robbie Harris, Marius Joubert, Jaco van Tonder. Conversions: Fred Zeilinga (5). Penalties: Zeilinga (2).

Pampas XV 31 (5) – Tries: Ramiro Moyano, Leonardo Senatore, Juan Pablo Estelles (2), Mariano Galarza. Conversions: Benjamín Madero (2), Santiago Gonzalez.
