Botha back in the dock

2009-10-24 00:00

THE bowling action of Johan Botha will face yet more scrutiny next week, after the Proteas and Warriors spinner was reported after last week’s match against the Dolphins at St George’s.

Botha will undergo tests along with Warriors team-mate Gus Theron, who was also reported after the Dolphins match.

This is the third time that Botha’s action has come under scrutiny. He was cited most recently against the Australians earlier this year, which resulted in his ‘doosra’ delivery being banned.

For Botha, a former seamer who pursued spin on the advice of Proteas coach Mickey Arthur, the constant attention to his elbow, wrist and anything else connected to the ball must be more than a slight source of irritation.

With the England touring party arriving in less than three weeks, the citing could not have come at a worse time for a man who fulfils a crucial role in South Africa’s limited overs’ plans.

Meanwhile, Cricket South Africa has named the squads for the Pro20 series against England, as well as a squad for the ODI matches against Zimbabwe. The ODI squad will stay the same for the first three ties of the five-match series against England.

Notable casualties in the Proteas squad are veterans Herschelle Gibbs and Makhaya Ntini, whose places have been taken by Lions batsman Alviro Pietersen and Eagles all-rounder Ryan McLaren.

“It is never easy to leave out senior players, particularly when they are men of the calibre of Herschelle Gibbs and Makhaya Ntini, who have given such wonderful service over a long period of time,” commented selection convener Mike Procter.

“But we also have to keep looking forward and reward those players who are knocking strongly on the door.”

Loots Bosman, now at the Dolphins, has also been recalled to the Pro20 set-up.

He will be joined in the squad by left-arm seamer Yusuf Abdulla, who made a name for himself during the IPL.
