Bowlers prepare for major final

The final of the Frank Lambert Competition — contested between Maritzburg Bowling Club and Maritzburg West — will be played at Pietermaritzburg Wanderers on Saturday.

In the semi-finals played last Sunday, Maritzburg beat Collegians, while West beat Wanderers.

Lynwood won the Lambert Brothers’ Trophy last weekend, defeating Howick in the final. In the semi-finals Lynwood beat Wanderers and Howick beat West.

• Bowlers are reminded that the 11th annual meeting of the association will be held on October 18 at Wanderers. Clubs are reminded that nominations for both executive and standing committees, and notices of motion, are to reach the district secretary by August 31.

At the conclusion of the KwaZulu-Natal Women’s Tournament, the 2008 point positions were: H. Phelan 26 points, S. Peech 25, J. Squires 15, M. Lucarne and G. McCalgan 14, B. Leyland-Smith 13, M. Opperman and C. Thomson 12, M. Combrink, B. James and P. Schlebusch 11.

The three-year position for the women is: M. Opperman 51 points, S. Peech 45, R. Varty 42, C. Hickinbotham 41, B. James 37, H. Phelan 36, M. Lucarne 32, J. Squires 30, P. Schlebusch 29, L. Anderson and V. Hillier 28.

The last points for the current bowls year can still be earned by both men and women at the KZN Open Singles Tournament, which will be played in Durban from August 15 to August 17. A reminder to all bowlers: the entries for these two singles events close on Friday.

• There will be no skills practice for the next two weeks due to the senior trips and fours being played. The next practice will be at the Wanderers Bowling Club on August 8 at 2.30 pm.

The district is appealing for volunteers to mark for both the prelim and masters singles. Twelve markers are needed per session. All those willing to assist must please contact Beryl.

• Maritzburg West will be holding their McCarthy Toyota Mixed Sixes this Sunday. Teams must consist of three men and three women. The format is fours and pairs in the morning and trips in the afternoon. Entries can be given to Colin (072 233 0402) or Marinda (082 874 3623).
