Boxcarts: shower power drives Maritzburg’s Team Zooma to Heritage day victory

2010-09-27 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG team scooped the bragging rights for the Red Bull boxcart race held in Soweto to mark Heritage day on Friday.

While fishing one day at a dam and using a bathtub as a cooler for their beers, the local lads heard about the race on the radio and Team Zooma was created.

The team is made up of John Cannon, David Johnson, Michael Webb and Mark Johnson, and pit crew members Nick Jardine, Sean Johnson, Randal Jagger and Courtney Wicks.

Their boxcart pokes fun at the famous incident in which Jacob Zuma, charged with rape in 2005, told a court he had a shower after sex to “cut the risk of contracting HIV”. The team also had Team Zooma caps and T-shirts made for the event.

More than 50 teams in Africa were chosen for the race, which required participants to build their own boxcarts to the organisers’ specifications.

The requirements were that the cart had to be human-powered, weigh less than 100 kg and have a steering wheel, a good set of brakes and a functional hooter.

The winner was determined by creativity, showmanshipthe speed of the cart in a downhill race over 500 metres,

Required to do a 30-second skit before the race, Team Zooma did a dance to the song Splish Splash (I was taking a bath) using bath sponges while wrapped in towels.

Said Webb, “We never thought that we could win.

“The other carts were brilliant … It was Maritzburg versus Johannesburg and we thought that we didn’t have a chance.”

The team won a tailor-made 4x4 adventure holiday.
