Boy (3) drowns in toilet pit

2014-12-13 00:00

A THREE-YEAR-OLD boy drowned and died in a hole allegedly dug for toilets yesterday morning in France township outside Pietermaritzburg.

Hlumisa Makhasi was playing with his friend in a neighbour’s yard when the incident happened, according to his father, Simphiwe Gqotha.

The hole had been dug about two months ago to build a toilet and because of rain, water filled in, he said.

A visibly shaken Gqotha said he asked the friend where his son was and the little boy pointed to the hole.

“When I got there I couldn’t see anything. With the help of neighbours we … put man-made steps and finally we managed to pull him out, unfortunately he had died,” he said.

At the scene, The Witness saw shocked family members and neighbours accompanying forensics services as they took Makhasi’s body to a van.

His mother was too upset to speak.
