Boy (7) hit by speeding minibus

2010-03-16 00:00

A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD boy was knocked down by a minibus taxi in Church Street, opposite the Cumberland Hotel, yesterday afternoon.

ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks said the boy had suffered serious head injuries and both his legs were fractured.

Malcolm Chetty (14), the boy’s cousin, who witnessed the accident, said the taxi was speeding up Church Street and hit his cousin.

“I was standing on the pavement and I shouted for my cousin to wait till the robots turn red for the cars to stop.

“Just as the robot turned green, the taxi accelerated and knocked him down,” explained Malcolm.

The boy was taken by ER24 to Grey’s Hospital in a critical condition.

The driver of the minibus was not injured. However, it is not known what happened to him, as police spokesman Senior Superintendent Jay Naicker referred The Witness to Superintendent Vincent Mdunge, whose cellphone was on voicemail.
