Boy’s murder: pastor released

2014-07-12 00:00

THE Pongola pastor arrested by the police and accused by residents of butchering a four-year-old boy has been released due to lack of evidence.

This comes after a week that has seen the pastor’s church and home in the Ncontshane township torched and looted, as well as violence that led to an arson attack on another person’s home and the Simdlangentsha Magistrate’s Court.

The 51-year-old pastor who leads the St John’s Faith Mission Church was released from custody after the NPA declined to prosecute due to insufficient evidence.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Nathi Mncube said: “If we find more evidence we will consider prosecuting [him] but at this stage the evidence is not strong enough.”

Meanwhile, police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said bones have been unearthed at another home belonging to the pastor. They were found by workers laying a municipal water pipe. It is not yet known what type of bones they are.
