Bread: 'People's' bakery to be built

2008-05-20 00:00

A Pietermaritzburg non-profit organisation is on a mission to save a poor community from the rising price of bread. The RivLife Community Centre (RLCC) will build a R500 000 bakery to provide bread for the Cinderella Park, Glenwood and Eastwood communities at affordable prices.

RLCC executive manager, Mirolyn Naidoo, said the bakery aims to address the needs of the unemployed and low-income communities in the area. She said the facility will create jobs as well as supply affordable daily bread.

“Those who suffer most … are the poor … RivLife wants to provide nutritious bread to the communities … at affordable prices through the establishment of a community bakery …

“In order to ensure that RLCC projects are sustainable, a coffee shop and 50-seater conference facility will also be established,” said Naidoo.
