Breakthrough in Southport housebreak

2011-03-30 00:00

POLICE have made a breakthrough in an attempted housebreaking case that happened in the Southport area at the beginning of the month.

On March 9 at approximately 11 pm, Bastiaan Heilbron was awoken by a noise in his house. Investigating the source of the noise, he saw that his wife was trying to hold the bedroom door closed because somebody was outside trying to force it open.

A police report confirmed the perpetrator had taken a cement flower pot and broken through a glass sliding door to gain entry.

Heilbron grabbed his firearm and fired a warning shot, and the perpetrator fled.

On Thursday, a fortnight after the attempted housebreaking, a tracing team from Port Shepstone arrested two suspects in the Bhobhoyi area who they believe are connected to the incident.

Lindokuhle Mjoki and Vuyani Jerome Chiliza appeared in court on Monday. The hearing was remanded to April 1 for a bail application.

When arrested, Chiliza had a gunshot wound on his thigh and police believe that this may be a result of the shot fired by Heilbron.

Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid of the SA Police Force in Port Shepstone confirmed that Southport detectives are looking for a third suspect.

“The possibility that they [the suspects] can be connected to other cases is also being investigated.”
