Bremner beats top Sunshine Tour golfers

2008-06-10 00:00

MBABANE — Cullinan professional Merrick Bremner held his nerve down the homestretch to upstage some of the biggest names on the Sunshine Tour and lift the R400 000 Lombard Insurance Classic on Sunday.

The young Turk showed maturity beyond his 22 years to hold off the combined challenges of Kevin Stone and Bradford Vaughan, and kept his overnight advantage going with a six under par 66.

His winning total of 18 under par 198 was three shots better than Stone, who matched his 66 for sole second and four clear of Vaughan (69) and former South African Amateur Strokeplay winner Josh Cunliffe, who carded a 67.

Albert Pistorius and Warren Abery tied for fifth on 13 under par 203, both players signing for 68s.

The 2005 Sunshine Tour Summer Q-School winner birdied the first hole, gave it back at the fourth but forged ahead again with a birdie at the fifth. After birdies at the seventh and ninth, he romped home in style with six straight pars after a birdie on the 11th and an eagle at the final 13th.

Final scores:
