Brrrr! Brace for teeth-chattering cold over the next few days

2011-06-09 00:00

WITH a severe weather system moving over the province, it appears that the worst of winter has arrived.

For the brave residents of Underberg and Giant’s Castle it hasn’t just politely crept up, but has barged in and is taking over.

Today they can expect an icy maximum of just two degrees with the wind chill factor and a 30% chance of showers after yesterday’s light dusting of snow on the high mountains near Underberg.

Terance Letley, a floor manager at the Spar in Underberg, said, “We have already had a few housewives come in this week to stock up on firewood preparing for the cold front ahead of us.”

Lungie Mtolo of Thabo Tours based at Sani Pass said, “Temperatures higher up near the mountains have reached just 1,2 degrees. We have had a light snow that appears and is washed away by short periods of rainfall every few hours.”

Thundershowers and heavy rain yesterday over the province did not cause any damage.

Temperatures will reach a maximum of 16 degrees in Pietermaritzburg with a 30% chance of showers throughout the day. The chance of showers will increase to 60% tomorrow while temperatures remain in the same cold range as today.

The South Coast region was also drenched by showers after storms hit the area at noon yesterday.

Today the South Coast expects a 30% chance of intermittent showers, and cloudy and overcast conditions.

The Durban weather bureau warned that wet and cold conditions will continue throughout the weekend.
