Bruss and Pitchford win Nobby Nel Memorial race

2009-10-13 00:00

DEON Bruss and Hillary Pitchford teamed up on Sunday to win Umvoti Canoe Club’s annual Nobby Nel Memorial race on the Upper Umgeni.

Skillfully avoiding the mayhem of the upstream start, they were the first over the Albert Falls weir and held that lead for the full 21 km to the finish at Thornvale farm.

With the Umgeni at 4,7cumecs, the lighter K2s, like U16s Donovan Wewege and Andrew Adie, had an advantage they exploited to the full, taking second place just 13 seconds off the winners. Old campaigners on low rivers, Gary Behn and Kevin Goddard, were third a minute-and-a-half later.

Michaelhouse paddlers David Pearce/Andrew Houston and Julian Atkinson/Jeremy Bradford respectively took the second and third places in the junior race.

Juniors Jenna Ward and Jenna Starr won the women’s race in 18th place in an otherwise weak women’s field.

Interestingly, not only the whole race but also the sub-master, master and grand master categories were all won by mixed doubles.

A good entry of almost 300 paddlers enjoyed the cool conditions and relaxed atmosphere of this first race in the KZN K2 river season.

On Saturday, Clint “Lighty” Pretorius teamed up with Scott Rutherfoord to win the annual Mouth to Mouth Ski Race.

The 40 km downwind from Richards Bay to Mtunzini started from the main beach at Richards Bay, with just a light north-easterly breeze blowing and the swells still coming from the south. The wind freshened steadily until the rain began at around 1 pm but the conditions were not ideal.

The first three boats were well separated with just over two minutes between each. Brothers Brett and Daryl Bartho were back together for the first time in a while to take second place with Wayne Wilson and Matt Bouman taking the third spot.

Danica Vorster and Tiffany Kruger were the only woman’s crew to complete the race, finishing 21st overall in the doubles. Sean Wisedale and Cathy Rowan won the mixed doubles from the local crew of Stephen and Simone Scrace.

Marc Holtzhausen, showing a steady return to form after a long spell abroad, won the singles in an excellent sixth overall and almost seven minutes ahead of second-placed Shadrack Mkhize. Mark Mulder was third.
