Brüssow is waiting for overseas offers

BLOEMFONTEIN — No formal offer has yet been received for the services of Heinrich Brüssow.

His agent and Cape Town-based attorney, Stephan Weyers, said that there is interest in his services world-wide.

“We are first waiting for an overseas offer before we enter into talks with local unions. Heinrich’s first priority now is the Boks and the Tri-Nations. He does not want to get involved in negotiations,” said Weyers.

He confirmed that the Cheetahs are one of the unions that are interested in Brüssow, whose contract with Free State expires at the end of the Currie Cup. Free State backline coach Hawies Fourie told Sport24 this week that Brüssow had received a “very good offer from WP”, but Weyers denied that an offer had been made.

Cheetahs coach Naka Drotské confirmed Free State’s interest in keeping Brüssow. “We will do everything in our power to keep him. I’m still positive that he will stay. We hope to receive an answer soon.”

Brüssow (24) has been struggling with injuries for the past year or so, but his excellent form in 2009 — when he was one of the nominees for SA’s player of the year award — makes him an attractive target for the country’s leading provinces and overseas sides.

Brüssow and Schalk Burger compete for the Springbok No 6 jersey. It is possible that Burger may primarily be used as a blindside flank in the future.

The injured Burger is expected to play in the World Cup in New Zealand.
