Buccaneers enter foreign territory at Woodburn

2009-04-08 00:00

ORLANDO Pirates’ glittering array of stars will play a Premier Soccer League (PSL) game in Pietermaritzburg for the first time when they meet Maritzburg United at Woodburn Stadium tonight.

Last season’s PSL Footballer of the Year, Teko Modise, is the headline attraction for the Buccaneers, along with fellow Bafana Bafana players Katlego Mashego at striker and star defender Lucas Thwala.

Young striker Siphelele Mthembu, who joined Pirates from Maritzburg City at the beginning of the season after a contractual wrangle with Kaizer Chiefs and has been scoring goals, is in the Bucs squad, but will have to pass a late fitness test for a hamstring injury.

“The fact that it’s our first PSL match in Pietermaritzburg is a very important factor for Bucs — firstly because we haven’t ever played there before, and it will be a different environment for the players,” Pirates media manager Mickey Modisane said yesterday.

“But with the magnitude of support we have in the Pietermaritzburg area, I’m sure that will make our players feel almost at home.

“Then, of course, it will also be a chance for our fans to see Siphelele Mthembu, who is from Pietermaritzburg, playing in our colours in his home town, which is important given the controversy when he joined our team.”

All grandstand tickets for the match are sold out and by yesterday evening there were 1 500 open stand tickets (R25) left that will be available today at Shoprite/Computicket until 4 pm. No tickets will be sold at the ground.
