Budget priorities

2008-10-21 00:00

Budget priorities for the period ahead include job creation, education and skills development, strengthening the public health system, fighting crime and reducing rural poverty.

• Among other things, government’s housing grant programme will get a R3,7 billion boost, bringing housing spending this year to R10,2 billion. Spending over the next three years will total R44,7 billion.

• The provinces will get an extra R300 million this financial year to cater for the growing number of people on anti-retroviral treatment. Another R932 million has been added to the provinces’ planned comprehensive HIV and Aids grant over the next three years, bringing total spending on this programme to R12,4 billion over the medium term.

• Old age pensions and other grants will rise by an unexpected R20 a month as part of a bid to protect poor people against soaring food prices.

• Government is setting aside R11 billion over the next three years to deal with the short and longer-term implications of the price increases.
