Bull terrier: Doing well after 24 hour ordeal in drain with porcupine

2010-01-11 00:00

A Bull Terrier in the Albert Falls area that chased a Porcupine into a storm drain on Wednesday last week and became stuck inside the drain for 24 hours as well as being injured by the Porcupine , has reportedly recuperated well.

A staff member at the Vets House veterinary practice said the dog was taken home by its owner, Kelvin Channing, on Thursday.

Channing was putting up razor wire for a neighbour when his two dogs — a Jack Russell and a bull terrier called Dusky — apparently saw two porcupines and gave chase into a storm water drain on a provincial road.

After a while the Jack Russell came out with a few quills stuck in its face, but the bull terrier did not.

Maureen Vida of the SPCA said Channing, after realising the dog would not be able to get out on its own, contacted the SPCA.

“Inspector Rob Deere … realised that this rescue was not as simple as expected, as night was falling.”

She said the next morning, after digging for three hours, Channing, and inspectors Wylie and Deere managed to rescue the dog.

“It had apparently suffered serious injuries as the quills had gone deep in its body.”

Senior Inspector Wylie commented that if the dog had not been seen entering the drain, it would have become its grave site.
