Bulwer murder: juvenile in court

2013-08-14 00:00

ONLY one suspect made a brief appearance at the Hlanganani Magistrate’s Court yesterday for the weekend murder and robbery of 81-year-old Michael Poval of Bulwer.

Police arrested five men, but only one was charged and appeared in court.

Spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the accused, who cannot be named because he is a juvenile, will be back in court next week. “After questioning the other suspects it was established that they were not involved in the commission of the crime,” he said.

Meanwhile, three men were arrested in Newcastle yesterday morning for the murder of farmer Timothy Green (44) and are due to appear in court today.

“One was arrested near the mine where he was hiding, another was arrested near the Ekuseni area, and the last one was found in the vicinity of Green’s farm,” said Zwane.

Green’s two cellphones, a shotgun and a box of ammunition were recovered.

The suspects, aged between 25 and 34, will be charged with murder, housebreaking, theft and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Green was attacked and killed at his Willow Green Farm on Sunday night. He was shot in the legs and head and died at the scene.

The suspects allegedly made off with the Green’s van, loaded with his stolen belongings. His gun was also stolen. Fingerprints were found on a wine bottle.

Koos Marais of the KwaZulu-Natal Agricultural Union’s security desk praised the police for their excellent work in making speedy arrests.
